Katadyn BeFree 1.0L Water Filtration System
Created illustration
A light, collapsible 1-liter water microfilter with a 0.1-micron hollow-fiber membrane. Built for quick field water filtration, but it does not remove dissolved chemicals or reliably treat viruses.
Hiking, personal bug-out bags and outdoor situations with accessible freshwater sources of known microbiological risk.

SurvivalPick analysis
Our assessment
Katadyn specifies a 0.1-micron membrane and a rated flow of up to 2 liters per minute, with a stated service quantity of up to 1,000 liters depending on water quality. Those are manufacturer claims, not guarantees in every water source. Dirty water and clogged fibers slow filtration; the membrane can be swished or shaken to clean it in the field. The standard BeFree 1.0L is listed around 63 grams in Katadyn's US documentation; special editions may differ in weight and packaging.
A microfilter is not a universal purifier. A 0.1-micron filter addresses bacteria and protozoan cysts but cannot be relied upon to remove viruses, dissolved pesticides, fuel, salt or heavy metals. For questionable water sources, add treatment appropriate to the actual contamination risk, and avoid water with suspected chemical pollution.
The BeFree is compelling for one person's outdoor kit, but its flexible reservoir may be vulnerable to punctures and the relatively small capacity means frequent refills. It also should not be treated as the only water option in a bug-out plan; keep stored potable water and an alternative treatment method.
Research basis: Katadyn manufacturer BeFree 1.0L USA specifications,. Exact retail flask color and edition still require visual verification;
